Problem
Access to care
Access to easy, time-efficient, and private testing solutions is a persistent healthcare challenge.
Patients face socioeconomic barriers in visiting a clinic and companies struggle with scaling and communication.
SHK's Free Testing Program aimed to provide a new testing option, one that could directly improve health outcomes for patients and payers alike.
Research & Insights
Meet the Stakeholders
Prior to prototyping, we needed to uncover multiple perspectives around testing programs.
1. Patients
To reach our target audience, I visited campuses and pride events where I uncovered difficulties around onboarding and collection.
Providing free testing to JSU students
These interviews revealed 2 high priority concerns:
privacy (discreet packaging, storing results and data)
cost
2. Providers
I also gathered feedback from our medical advisors via interviews and usability testing.
Many clinicians have a passion for serving their communities. But, there often aren't enough staff to meet those needs.
That's where alternative options, like at-home testing can bring major value. Post-receiving their results, it is often critical that patients find local resources for treatment or prevention which our advisors helped curate.
Aftercare for abnormal results
3. Payers
Working in healthcare, regulatory compliance is one of the constraints you'll face. Funding partners quickly become design collaborators around literacy, language, and learning materials.
Recurring design review meetings opened the door for improved onboarding experiences and product offerings.
Process
A Human-centric approach
From our stakeholder insights, we synthesized a core persona: Willie Johnson.
He's a young adult who has never completed a lab test outside of a doctor’s office, values privacy, and is skeptical about giving personal information online.
UX Persona - Willie Johnson
This persona aligned the team around real behavior and motivations.
With this context, we mapped a user flow with ideal steps and edge cases.
Onboarding User Flow
Our onboarding map highlighted potential entrances, redirects, and exit points.
After multiple rounds of iteration, I scripted task-based dogfooding sessions to simulate the project's launch.
Screenshot of bug found during dogfooding
Through this internal testing, we uncovered several critical improvements:
Enter personal information once
Optimize device responsiveness
Polish eligibility checks
These bugs were fixed and re-tested within a week, refining the experience before external release.
Solution
Better Health For All
Due to our due diligence, our public launch felt intuitive and trustworthy.
The program distributed an average of 48 kits per week (360 kits total).
Holistic care and proven results
100% of patients who tested abnormally were also connected to the Department of Health Services team for outreach.
Impact
New Verticals, new horizons
This testing program created a reusable design system which adapted to various tests and new testing partners such as health plans.
For the business, this meant:
↑ 340% test volume, year-over-year
↑ 15% in platform adoption
95% partner retention
1000s of members tested
Reflection
Closing Care Gaps
Working in healthcare, there is a lot of red tape to overcome.
But once you do, your work truly feels impactful. I'll let our patients speak for themselves.
"This is an amazing resource, especially since all the clinics had a month long wait time in my area."
"Keep this free screening program because it helps me and others who don't have insurance to get assistance with prep and STD awareness. Thank you very very much. Highly recommend this service."
"My husband did have a positive result which prompted us to seek treatment for him. He was diagnosed with Colon Cancer but thankfully it was caught in the early stages so after his Colectomy he is doing well and does not require chemotherapy at this time. We are truly grateful. Your test was instrumental in my husband’s early detection of Colon Cancer. Thank you so much."
